Sony Dash software update adds USB playback by month’s end
Looks like Sony will be dishing out a new software update to Dash owners shortly. The first over-the-air update for Sony's Personal Internet Viewer is expected to arrive at the end of the month carrying a number of usability and feature enhancements according to a Sony email sent to Dash owners. These include MP3 playback and picture viewing off USB, a full-screen app theme, and enhanced alarm functionality like adjustable snooze duration and one-touch alarm dismissal. Sony's also promising new themes and additional internet radio options in a June update. Too bad Sony can't deliver the device a battery and faster processor OTA but hey, free software is free. See the full contents of the Sony email after the break. Winscape virtual window features Wiimote headtracking, absolutely made of win
We have not modified the above picture in any way -- Scout's Honor. That's a real baby, wearing a real IR necklace that interacts with a real Wiimote . What's not real, of course, is the view of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. That is generated by Ryan Hoagland's DIY virtual window, a brilliant pastiche of interior design, RED ONE footage and Johnny Chung Lee-style headtracking , all directed to your eyes by a Mac Pro feeding a pair of plasma screens. As the viewer moves around, dual 1080p images move the opposite direction, providing the convincing illusion of looking out a real pane of glass at the incredibly detailed scenery beyond. Exciting? Then you'll be giggling like Jr. when you hear it's for sale. After spending a year figuring out how to mount, drive and cool the whole shebang, Hoagland would like you to have one too; he plans to have basic kits ready by July for under $3000. Watch baby-powered plasma in motion after the break, as well as a sweet time-lapse video of the build process. [Thanks, Andy , ArjanD] Continue reading Winscape virtual window features Wiimote headtracking, absolutely made of win Winscape virtual window features Wiimote headtracking, absolutely made of win originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 15 Apr 2010 15:17:00 EST. Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer, Now With 100% More Netflix Streaming [Sony]
The Sony Dash reminded us mostly of a really nice Chumby when we got to play with it at CES. Now when Dash launches in April, it'll be a really nice Chumby that streams Netflix from your Queue. The device has a 7-inch touchscreen and provides access to over 1,500 apps from the Bravia Internet Video platform and from Chumby. Today Sony also announced that eHow, Golflink, and Livestrong.com will be providing content for the Dash, but the big news is the streaming of Netflix movies and TV shows. Just touch the Netflix icon on the display and you'll be taken to your Queue, from which you can select your content of choice. A Personal Internet Viewer ain't a tablet on the order of the iPad or Notion Ink Adam, but having Netflix on board does make the Dash an appealing content-delivery device—especially for its $200 price tag. Sony 'dash' Personal Internet Viewer to Feature Movies and TV Episodes Streamed Instantly from Netflix eHow, Golflink and LIVESTRONG.COM also join Sony's growing dash platform SAN DIEGO, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ — Sony today announced that its new dash™ personal Internet viewer will feature a dedicated application for Netflix, allowing Netflix members to instantly watch thousands of movies and TV episodes directly on the unit. Additionally, Demand Media, Inc. has confirmed that its service offerings, eHow, Golflink and LIVESTRONG.COM will be added to the expanding content lineup. Sony's dash personal Internet viewer wirelessly delivers the real-time Internet to any room of the home or office by providing always on, sequential display of over 1,500 apps from Sony's Bravia™ Internet Video platform and the chumby industries, inc. personalized content channel. Further, the new dash device has the ability to stream online music videos, television, or film content on-demand. It features a vivid 7-inch color touch screen and multiple viewing angles: upright, ideal for a table or nightstand; and tilted, perfect for a countertop, keeping its users connected, informed, and entertained without the need for a PC. "We're continuing to develop innovative products that bring online music, news, video and more into our customers' homes in real time," said Brennan Mullin, senior vice president of Sony Electronics' personal imaging and audio business. "By adding content from Netflix and Demand Media to our dash product, Sony is giving consumers a new, convenient way to enjoy some of the highest quality entertainment and most useful information available on the Internet today." Movies and TV episodes streamed instantly from Netflix can be easily accessed through a Queue-based user interface, in which choices from a Netflix member's Queue will be automatically displayed when the Netflix icon on the device is touched. From Demand Media, eHow is a leading how-to resource with a thriving online community dedicated to providing people with the ability to research, share and discuss solutions for life's everyday projects. eHow brings thousands of instructional, professional and high-definition videos to the dash platform. Designed to help golfers of all ages and skill levels improve their game, Golflink provides hundreds of its valuable instructional golf videos from world class coaches such as Hank Haney and Jim McLean as well as hole-by-hole golf course flyovers. LIVESTRONG.COM is a partnership between Demand Media and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), and is home to 2.1 million registered members who share a passion to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. The channel offers hundreds of videos from topics such as healthy food choices and treating injuries to instructional videos on sports and fitness. Sony's dash personal Internet viewer will be available this April for about $199 at www.sonystyle.com, Sony Style® retail stores and a variety of authorized dealers nationwide.

Qualcomm’s FLO TV Service Will Be Demoed On Snapdragon Smartbooks At MWC [Qualcomm]
We've seen bits and pieces of Qualcomm's FLO live TV service, curiously even on an iPhone , but at MWC it'll be showing it off on Snapdragon-powered smartbooks. It enables real-time updates via Twitter while watching live TV. If you don't have a Twitter account, or can't stand the thought of getting updates about footballers while watching a sports match, Qualcomm will also give the viewer info from breaking news services and other e-magazines. FLO TV has heaps of different channels to watch, including ESPN, Comedy Central, MTV, NBC and Nickelodeon. The jargon-filled press release is below, but in the meantime there should be some solid news including product launches with FLO TV coming this week. [ Qualcomm via TechRadar ] Image credit: Electricpig Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, today announced FLO-EV, the next evolution of the FLO™ air interface for new deployments of mobile TV and other advanced broadcast mobile media services. Intended primarily for international markets, FLO-EV builds on the success of FLO technology to enable a rich suite of mobile content and services with greater channel capacity and significant performance improvements. FLO-EV is designed to help wireless operators lower the deployment costs for delivering multimedia content to mobile devices. Analysts have predicted the global market for mobile media services will surpass $90 billion by 2018. Adoption of mobile media is being driven through a combination of increasing consumer awareness and industry investment. Wireless operators, broadcasters and content providers are all seeking to implement the best technologies to drive new mobile media business models. FLO-EV can help them by substantially lowering the cost of rolling out mobile media services while preserving features critical to the user experience, such as high-quality video, reduced power consumption, rapid channel changing times and increased channel capacity. "As a technology enabler and leader in the mobile media space, Qualcomm is continually looking to improve the capabilities of FLO technology to deliver more advanced broadcast services to our worldwide customers," said Neville Meijers, senior vice president and general manager of MediaFLO Technologies. "FLO-EV is the result of our continued innovation and dedication to providing the most compelling and technically advanced offering to both wireless operators and mobile media consumers. By pushing the envelope with our design and development efforts, we are confident of staying at the forefront of the rapidly expanding and dynamic mobile media industry." FLO-EV features a variety of technical enhancements to the original FLO Rev. A air interface (TIA-1099), including a 3-5 dB improvement in performance with the same spectral efficiency. This link margin can translate into a 30-50 percent reduction in capital and operating costs to deploy a FLO-EV network. Moreover, the costs savings can be realized without negatively affecting channel change times or increasing power consumption on the mobile device, thereby preserving a high-quality user experience. FLO-EV is well suited for new mobile TV network launches and as an upgrade to existing FLO Rev. A networks. FLO-EV can increase the channel capacity of a FLO Rev. A network by 50 percent or more using the existing transmit sites with no increase in radiated power. The MediaFLO™ services platform enables the broadcast delivery of high-quality mobile entertainment and information to the mass market. In addition to live mobile TV, the MediaFLO platform supports enhanced mobile broadcast services such as streaming video and audio, clipcasting media, datacasting, interactive applications and targeted advertising – providing a compelling mobile media experience while enabling profitable business models. Invented for mobility and complementary to 3G and Wi-Fi services, the MediaFLO platform is designed to increase capacity and coverage and reduce costs for multimedia content delivery to unlimited mobile devices simultaneously. The MediaFLO platform is based on the FLO™ air interface, an open standard recognized by ETSI, ITU-R and TIA. Additional information is available at www.mediaflo.com.
