Netflix Eyes iPhone for Movie, TV Streaming (Wired News)

Netflix has renewed its interest in the iPhone as a video streaming platform, with a survey asking its customers how much they want an app for the iPhone (and, almost certainly, the iPad). The proposed app would allow them to watch thousands of movies and television shows for about the price of one movie ticket per month, with no need for a traditional cable or satellite subscription.

Netflix: lack of HD streaming ‘no loss’ for Wii owners

Let's see if we can't come up with a small list of things that would be, quite frankly, overkill in a modern game console / video streaming device. Color? You know, some of the best films ever made were in black and white. Audio? Just a distraction, really. HD? Available on damn near every new TV, sure, but don't you think it's a bit... much? Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime does , obviously, as does Netflix -- at least according to an interview recently posted on The Wiire . Indeed, the company's VP of Corporate Communications Steve Swasey goes so far as to say that "the HD experience at Netflix Instant Watching isn't that overwhelming. It's a little bit underwhelming. So the Wii folks aren't going to miss that much." Y'know, it's not every day that we hear a company downplay its own product, but we suppose that the man should throw a bone to the twenty-six million homes in America who already own the console. He goes on to say that "the vast majority of content that is available for streaming through Netflix is not HD content. So, there is really no loss for the Wii consumer." Besides, "PS3 and Xbox users have 1 in 17 titles available in HD, and it's streamed in 720... it's not in 1080, and it's not in 5.1 surround sound or anything." Sure, Swasey -- anything can make sense if you explain it. Well, almost anything. Adobe Responds to the iPad’s Lack of Flash [Flash]

As you're probably aware , the Apple iPad , like the iPhone and iPod Touch, doesn't support Flash. Apple has its reasons for this, but clearly Adobe isn't happy about it. Here's their response. It looks like Apple is continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers. Unlike many other ebook readers using the ePub file format, consumers will not be able to access ePub content with Apple's DRM technology on devices made by other manufacturers. And without Flash support, iPad users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web. If I want to use the iPad to connect to Disney, Hulu, Miniclip, Farmville, ESPN, Kongregate, or JibJab — not to mention the millions of other sites on the web — I'll be out of luck. Adobe and more than 50 of our partners in the Open Screen Project are working to enable developers and content publishers to deliver to any device, so that consumers have open access to their favorite interactive media, content, and applications across platform, regardless of the device that people choose to use. The main arguments against Flash running on the iPad are that it's a resource hog and a security risk. Both true! Hopefully the web is moving away from relying on Flash for videos and ugly menus, with HTML5 acting as a more-than-adequate replacement . But we're not there yet. While I can appreciate the fact that Apple is trying to keep the iPad more stable by not including Flash, the fact that it kills off most online gaming and video streaming in the process makes the tradeoff questionable. Firefox 3.6 Officially Available, Brings Speed Increases, One-Click Themes, and More [Downloads]

Windows/Mac/Linux: The oft-delayed but much improved 3.6 version of Firefox has landed, offering up faster performance, one-click themes, safer add-ons and plug-ins, better font handling, and a lot more. Grab it now. We've been downloading and trying out Firefox 3.6 from the first alpha, and from what we've seen, 3.6 is a bigger update than the minor decimal point iteration would indicate. It ranked second only to the cutting-edge Chrome builds in our speed and performance tests, which meant there was real improvement in startup time and page rendering. What's new? The video above provides the highlights, but the talking points are: Instant themes: Point 3.6 at the Personas gallery , and you can hover over a theme to see how it would look in your browser. Click to apply it, and it's your browser skin. You can then manage your Personas from the Add-Ons menu. Out-of-date plugins notifier: Start your browser up with an outdated, and potentially virus-friendly, Adobe Flash or other plugin, and Firefox will tell you and provide an update link. Full-screen "open" video: If you're looking at a video streaming in Ogg or another free format, Firefox can play it full screen . WOFF support: More intriguing for developers than users, but, still, Firefox now accepts and downloads smaller-sized Web Open Font Format fonts , allowing sites to more quickly show you their text the way they intended. Faster, faster, faster: Mozilla promises better JavaScript, startup time, and rendering speeds. You can read up more on what's new in the 3.6 release notes , but you're probably going to want to discover its features for yourself. Firefox 3.6 is a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Firefox web browser [Mozilla]

White House App Keeps You Posted on Presidential Happenings, Streams Events Live [Downloads]

iPhone/iPod touch: only: Staying up to date with what's happening at the White House just got a whole lot easier thanks to a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch (coming soon to other devices). The official White House application is packed with news releases from the press room, photos of what's the President is up to, and archived videos of everything from public service announcements to the Weekly Address, but the coolest things about this app is the live video streaming that lets users watch press briefings, Presidential addresses, and other media events in real-time. A dedicated section of the app displays a schedule of upcoming broadcasts and taps right into the live videos you'd normally have to visit the White House web site to see. One thing to note: there are lots of apps in the App Store with "White House" in the name, so be sure to grab the free app called "The White House" to get the official version. Don't have an iPhone or iPod touch? Sit tight, there's a version of this app on the way that will work with any internet-enabled mobile device, including BlackBerry and Android.
