TouchpadPal Decreases Errors by Disabling the Touchpad While You Type [Downloads]

Windows: It's all too easy to brush your laptop's touchpad while typing and inject what should be at the end of the current sentence into a previous one. TouchpadPal disables the touchpad while you type for fewer cursor-created errors. More

Synaptics intros ClickEQ, multi-finger TouchPad-IS trackpad solutions

Synaptics has been a serious roll of late, first introducing those luscious multitouch gestures to older trackpads, and last month extending its Gesture Suite to Linux and Chrome OS . Here at Computex, the company is expanding its TouchPad family of solutions, with the multi-finger PC TouchPad-IS range seeing the first update. Aside from being able to recognize four-finger gestures, the new platform prevents accidental activation of the cursor when a user's palm unintentionally contacts the TouchPad, and it also brings the aforementioned multi-finger capabilities of a touchscreen right onto a PC's trackpad. Next up is the new ClickEQ, which is hailed as the "industry's first hinge-less uniform force, uniform click depth ClickPad mechanical design." As you'd expect, this feels an awful lot like the glass trackpad that Apple's freshest MacBooks have, but you won't find us kvetching about getting a similar technology onto run-of-the-mill laptops and netbooks. Moving on, the company is also introducing new OEM customization capabilities for Synaptics gesture workflow technology, Scrybe , which will allow users to store specific trackpad settings and references so the whole family can control the laptop their own way. Sadly, there's no published ship date for any of these whiz-bang contraptions, but we're cautiously hoping to see it implemented in at least prototype form as we scour the show floor. Hanvon CEO smashes Apple effigy at TouchPad launch (video)

Want to draw attention to an otherwise ordinary piece of consumer electronics? Do something emotive like, say, smash a giant Apple ice sculpture in front of the world's Chinese press. Besides putting the boys in Cupertino on notice, Hanvon 's officially launching the company's TouchPad B10 -- a 10.1-inch multitouch capacitive slate that we went hands-on with back in March. A €500ish device that runs Windows 7 on a retired 1.3GHz Celeron M ULV743 processor and Intel GMA 4500 graphics capable of delivering about 3.5 hours of battery life. Other specs include 2GB of memory, a regular ol' 2.5-inch 250GB or 320GB hard disk, HDMI-out, and WiFi. Watch the theatrics after the break while we wait for Hanvon's 1 million units sold announcement. Customize Scrybe for Powerful App and Site Launching [Screenshot Tour]

Windows: Synaptics' Scrybe software puts multi-finger scrolling on your Windows laptop, sure. But it also understands finger-drawn letters, launches sets of apps with a three-finger tap, and pulls off some other neat multi-touch stunts. Here's how to get it installed and configured. More

Hanvon’s multitouch tablet previewed, surfaces in China March 25th with 1080p playback

Though cheap Android craptablets were a commodity item at CeBIT 2010, that doesn't mean we didn't find the occasional diamond in the rough. Specifically, the Hanvon Touchpad BC10C , a sleek, multitouch Windows 7 device with specs firmly entrenched in high-end netbook territory. Thanks to our friend jkkmobile , we now know exactly what's powering this thing -- a comparatively juice-gulping 1.3GHz Celeron M ULV 743 CPU and GMA4500 graphics -- and that when it comes to the US and Europe, it'll cost a little more than we thought, hovering around $877. Mind you, that price bump might be worth it when you consider just how smoothly the 10-inch tablet performs (peep 1080p video and Microsoft Surface Globe demos after the break) but also know your YouTube surfing sessions will be limited by a simply sad 3.5 hours of battery life. For when "mobile" isn't an important word in your vocabulary... the BC10C launches in China March 25th. ASUS EeeKeyboard PC hands-on (slight return)

Has it really been almost a year ( to the day! ) since we last gave some first-hand thoughts on ASUS' audacious Eee Keyboard PC ? Given the recent news of an apparent April release date , we thought we'd give the perennially-delayed machine another walkthrough, albeit via the touchpad only since it wasn't connected to an external display. The software is definitely still in need of some work -- we managed to crash the sucker within minutes, but the startup to Windows XP (the full version) was quick and admittedly pretty interesting to witness -- maybe at some point we could get a miniature game of Peggle going. When working, the menu was pretty smooth. None of the shortcuts were working, unfortunately , as the internet was down in the booth. As a keyboard, it feel pretty strong, resilient, and most of all clicky. Live through us vicariously, via still shots and moving pictures below. Disable Your Touchpad When You’re Typing with AutoHotkey [Annoyances]

Windows: Back in November we highlighted TouchFreeze , a small utility designed to prevent you from accidentally moving your mouse cursor and messing up text what you're typing while you're typing. Reader bobbo33 made an improved version with a clever AutoHotkey script. Photo by Patrick Denker . From bobbo33 at the Productive Geek forums : A few months back, LH posted a link to TouchFreeze: This program was designed to stop you from accidentally hitting your laptop/netbook's trackpad with your thumbs while you are typing. However, this program didn't really work for me—I still accidentally jumped the cursor from time-to-time. So here's my Autohotkey version, which has been working very well for me for the last couple of weeks since I created it. (Note that you can tweak the timer line if the 500ms default still isn't quite long enough for you.) I've noticed no performance lag at all with method, since it's a keyboard hook. I think it's always better to add little functions like these to my AHK master script, rather than installing YAU (yet another utility) for these small tweaks. ; Script Function: ; Disables trackpad for 500ms any time a key is pressed (prevents accidental mouse clicks) ; #NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases. SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability. SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir% ; Ensures a consistent starting directory. ;keyboard hook code credit: http://www.autohotkey.com/forum/post-127490.html#127490 #Persistent OnExit, Unhook hHookKeybd := SetWindowsHookEx(WH_KEYBOARD_LL := 13, RegisterCallback("Keyboard", "Fast")) Return ReenableTrackpad: BlockInput, MouseMoveOff Return Unhook: UnhookWindowsHookEx(hHookKeybd) ExitApp Keyboard(nCode, wParam, lParam) { Critical If !nCode { BlockInput, MouseMove SetTimer, ReenableTrackpad, 500 } Return CallNextHookEx(nCode, wParam, lParam) } SetWindowsHookEx(idHook, pfn) { Return DllCall("SetWindowsHookEx", "int", idHook, "Uint", pfn, "Uint", DllCall("GetModuleHandle", "Uint", 0), "Uint", 0) } UnhookWindowsHookEx(hHook) { Return DllCall("UnhookWindowsHookEx", "Uint", hHook) } CallNextHookEx(nCode, wParam, lParam, hHook = 0) { Return DllCall("CallNextHookEx", "Uint", hHook, "int", nCode, "Uint", wParam, "Uint", lParam) } TouchFreeze alternative in AHK [Productive Geek]

Lenovo X201 Tablet, W701 and new L series revealed by ThinkPad roadmap slide (updated)

Our crack team over at Engadget Chinese has managed to snag the above roadmap slide for Lenovo's mobile computer division. We've seen earlier versions of the same slide -- when the Edge and T410 / T510 were freshly added -- but the very latest iteration contains a sprinkling of even newer machines. Most intriguing will be the L400 and L500, which are set to replace the former "corporate mainstream" mainstay R series , which incites the more hopeful among us to believe that perhaps a new chassis design is on the cards too. No less notable are the new X201 models, though we might surmise by the mild numerical change that they'll just be upgraded to low-voltage Arrandale CPUs and left well enough alone. For more info on the likely specs of the W701, you should check out our breakdown of its FCC appearance right here . Update: In light of the X201 discovery, we've combed through our CES 2010 imagery and found a photo of an X200 with a touchpad , which was a curious thing to see when Lenovo has never sold such a creation. Our suspicion is that the X200 on display was in fact an early showing of the touchpad-enabled X201 that is soon to come. Browse past the break for the evidence.
