ASUS Eee Pad EP101TC opts for Android, dumps Windows Embedded Compact 7

The lesser of ASUS' two Eee Pad tablets announced at Computex this year, the EP101TC , is getting itself a software rejig ahead of its planned early 2011 launch. Originally slated to run on Microsoft's Windows Embedded Compact 7 -- a wordy OS, if nothing else -- the Pad will now entrust its operational infrastructure to Google's Android . ASUS is currently working on prototypes with Froyo on board, but Gingerbread (or Android 3.0 ) has not been ruled out as a possible final OS choice. We're told to expect the first public demos at CES 2011, with retail units likely following on from there at a relatively brisk pace. Ovi Music Unlimited replacing Nokia Comes with Music branding

We can't say that we'll miss the awkwardly named Comes with Music service branding from Nokia. Of course, we're making the assumption that India's recently christened Ovi Music Unlimited store will be making its way global as Nokia continues to tighten up its service offerings in the race to compete in the era of modern smartphones. It's certainly consistent with the new Ovi Music naming convention so why not. Otherwise, it looks like nothing else about the all you can eat (for a year) music offering has changed -- particularly the DRM that locks " your " music to your PC or CWM OMU handsets for life- ish . Buzz Gets Its Inevitable EPIC FTC Complaint [Google]

Despite the apologies and quick-fixes , Google still has a lot of explaining to do about Buzz. And if the FTC decides to hear the Electronic Privacy Information Center's complaint, we'd get some answers right quick. EPIC's 16-page complaint, filed yesterday, cites a dissatisfaction with the measures Google has taken so far to shore up Buzz's security. Users still have to opt out of the service, and Buzz still uses address books to build follower/following lists. An FTC complaint is significant because it frames the discomfort over Buzz legalistically. Should the agency choose to investigate—which given the degree of public outcry and clear privacy violations, they may well—that could result in government regulation of the service. If nothing else, it's another black mark on Buzz, and another indication that while Google may "do no evil," they don't necessarily always do good. [ EPIC via Ars Technica ]

Read SD Cards on Your iPhone With ZoomIt [IPhone]

Remember all those clever iPhone peripherals that we were supposed to see with firmware 3.0? Well ZoomIt is among the first. It's an SD card reader for the iPhone and iPod touch . Used in conjunction with the ZoomIt app, the dongle connects through the iPhone's dock connector to load photos, music and miscellaneous files (like PowerPoint, PDF and anything else supported by iPhone OS) from an SD card. If nothing else, it's a handy way to extend your iPhone's storage in a pinch, or simply backup your photos on vacation without lugging around a laptop (which is my particular reason for excitement here). You can pre-order the ZoomIt for $50 now. It'll actually be available this April. [ ZoomIt via iLounge ]

Relax, You Can Still Buy An iPhone In New York City. Just Not Online. (TechCrunch)

If you live in the New York City metropolitan area, as I do, and try to buy an iPhone from AT&T's website, you will probably get the same message I did after I entered my zipcode: "Sorry this package is not available in your area." Apparently, this is a big story . (Hey, it's the tail end of a long holiday weekend, and there is nothing else going on). For instance, the Consumerist called some ...

Robot Wine Rack Isn’t Fooling Anyone with That Disguise [Wine]

The designers say the mustache on this Robot Wine Rack is optional, but let's be honest with ourselves, shall we? We all know one does not in good taste forgo the donning of a mustache when one is readily available. And one is available for this peculiar little four bottle $40 wine rack. If nothing else, it's a quirky take on the venerable counter top wine rack. [ Etsy via Cool Material via Gear Fuse ]

Sony 280-inch 3D LED display headed to Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong

Look, we get the whole drive behind this 3D thing . For some, there's no better way to experience sports, films, or console game play and consumer electronics companies are desperate for a source of new revenue. But creating a 280-inch 3D LED display meant for public areas doesn't make a lot of sense long-term unless we're expected to carry those swank, polarized glasses everywhere we go. Nevertheless, Sony was demonstrating the 6.4 x 3.4-meter behemoth at the International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition 2009 in Japan. The panel combines 70 LED displays into a single monstrosity of overlapping images. If nothing else this "3D LED Wall" demonstrates Sony's rabid commitment to 3D for 2010 and an ominous future for our friends working in Times Square . See it in action after the break if you care.
