Sound Waves Being Used to Treat Strokes [Health]

Neurologists have built an ultrasound device which uses focused sound waves to destroy stroke-causing blood clots in brains. The procedure is non-invasive—requiring no drugs or surgery—and is already being tested on patients. The machine and procedure allows doctors to "surround the head with an array of transducers that can focus ultrasound beams on a single spot in the brain without damaging the skull." This means that diseased tissue could be destroyed without any collateral damage or risky surgery. [ Technology Review via Pop Sci ]

Sagem Orga’s SIMFi merges WiFi with SIM cards at long last, turns any phone into a hotspot

Thought WiFi spectrum was congested now? You ain't seen nothin' yet, because SIM card provider Sagem Orga has hooked up with Telefonica to develop a marvel of modern technology called "SIMFi" that combines -- you guessed it -- WiFi with a run-of-the-mill SIM card like you'd slip in your cell. In practical terms, this means that you're able to turn virtually any phone (or "classic handsets," as the company calls them) into a WiFi hotspot accessible by authenticated laptops, MIDs, and miscellaneous wireless gadgets in the immediate vicinity. Frankly, the concept is downright brilliant in its simplicity -- never mind the fact that we had no idea you could fit WiFi circuitry into a 25 x 15 x 0.76mm footprint -- and we're excited for what this means for the future of tethering, assuming carriers can keep up with the spectrum demands. MiFis and Overdrives of the world, you're on notice. Follow the break for Sagem Orga's full release. First Look At Ford Sync Apps: Pandora, Stitcher and Twitter [Cars]

Ford Sync -equipped cars will soon get apps , but not in the way you'd expect: instead of running on the Sync platform, they're simply controlled by it. The actual app—like Pandora, seen here—runs on your smartphone. The forthcoming Sync development kit, then, isn't for developers to write new apps for Sync, but to give them the tools they need to write smartphone apps that can communicate with Sync cars' head units. For Pandora and Stitcher, this means controls and track info are run through the steering wheel buttons and head unit LCD; for OpenBeak (new name for TwitterBerry) this means that your Ford will read your Twitter timeline aloud. As we've said before , this makes sense . It'd be tough to convince people write standalone apps for a car, but not too hard to convince smartphone app developers to add Sync compatibility to their existing iPhone, Android or BB apps. Psystar Is Royally Screwed [Psystar]

Yet another bad day for Psystar. After both Apple and the shady hackintosh company filed for summary judgements, the rulings are out, and Psystar is looking pretty screwed. All of Psystar's motions for summary judgment were denied, while all of Apple's were granted. That means that Apple got exactly what they wanted, while Psystar got exactly what they didn't want. Don't worry , there will be a trial. According to Groklaw , the court still needs to determine (*deep breath*): Apple's allegations of breach of contract; induced breach of contract, trademark infringement; trademark dilution; trade dress infringement; and state unfair competition under California Business and Professions Code § 17200; and common law unfair competition. Phew! So yeah, at this point it's looking less like a trial to determine Psystar's legitimacy, more like a trial to decide how much they owe Apple. Now, I'm no lawyer, but from where I'm standing this case is looking pretty grim for Psystar. I'll leave it to you legal eagles to explain exactly what all this means in the comments, because all I know is that it can't be good. [ Groklaw via 9 to 5 Mac , image via walknboston ]
