Use CoreAVC to Enable HD Playback on Netbooks [Netbook]
The newest generation netbooks sport a strong enough CPU/GPU combo to handle HD content, but millions of netbooks have a much lighter pairing that needs a little help. This guide will help get you stutter-free HD content on your netbook. Image from Big Buck Bunny , an open-source HD movie. Over at the website of magazine PCPro they've put together a guide to HD-playback on a netbook. Most netbooks, including nearly every netbook built before the end of 2009, isn't well suited for HD playback. Despite the hardware limitations however you can, with the proper codec, play HD video on your netbook. The crux of their setup is a combination of Media Player Classic Home Cinema and CoreCodec's CoreAVC codec . Media Player Classic is free but CoreAVC will run you $10. We know $10 isn't free, but we've used CoreAVC to help older computers function as media centers without getting crushed by HD-playback and we definitely think it worth $10. Especially when you note the playback time PCPro was squeezing out of their netbook battery with it: And if you're concerned what HD playback is going to do your netbook's battery life, you might just be pleasantly surprised. We took one of the latest Pine Trail netbooks lying around the PC Pro office and with screen brightness set to maximum and 802.11n enabled, found that 90 minutes of looping a 720P trailer only sapped about 25% of our battery. Turn off wireless and drop the brightness a little and you'd probably be able to get through 3 or 4 movies before running out of juice: perfect for those boring, long-haul flights. Check out the full article at PCPro to see how they configure the codec and player for maxium efficiency. Have a tip or trick for better media playback on a netbook? Let's hear about it in the comments. How-To Play HD Video on a Netbook [PCPro]

Avatar Coming to 3D Blu-Ray This November [BluRay]
If you weren't content with just seeing Avatar in 3D in theaters, don't worry. According to James Cameron, we'll be seeing a 3D Blu-Ray version of the movie before the end of this year: We'll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime. Oh, and I hear that Jason Chen might even do one of his infamous movie liveblogs if there's a director's commentary version. [ WSJ via Engadget ]

Sony Ericsson answers your nagging X10 questions, ‘newer version’ of Android will come
While we all continue to twiddle our thumbs in anticipation of the X10's general availability, Dutch site Tweakers took some time out with Sony Ericsson's Jacob Sten to get a few pressing questions from the community answered. It's quite a test -- Sten fielded over 80 questions in all -- and there were a few big takeaways that should be of interest to anyone who's got even glancing interest in putting this thing in their pocket in the next few months. First off, it's still scheduled to launch with Android 1.6 Donut, but his words along with a post over on SE's official Product Blog give us hope that we'll be seeing 2.0, 2.1, or something even fresher down the road (to quote the post's headline, the phone "will be upgradeable"). 1.6 doesn't support multitouch in the framework, and indeed, Sten confirms that the X10 will be a unitouch device, though it's not clear whether that could change with a newer firmware or if there's a hardware issue involved. As for pricing, we can expect this to launch for €599 (about $817) -- in Holland, anyhow, where it's on track to hit shelves before the end of the quarter. The subsidized pricing should hopefully be a tad less heart-stopping. 14 Things To Do Before Moving In or Out [Apartments]
Changing apartments can be exhilarating, intimidating, a design challenge, a shopping trip, and many other things. If you're switching up spaces, Apartment Therapy has a two-part, seven-points-each checklist you should read a good deal before the end of the month. Photo by jbm4381 . A parent who's great at nagging will cover many of these bases for a younger mover, but Apartment Therapy's checklists have some good, time-tested advice on moving in and out. Here's one tip each from the "out" and "in" lists: Clean out the oven and fridge: We always like to leave the apartment how we found it (which means cleaning the oven and the fridge). Schedule these tasks at least a month to two weeks before you move since they can be time consuming. You can line the oven with tinfoil to protect it from future spills. Consider your outlets: Once you have those heavy pieces of furniture in place it won't be as easy to move them to put in a multi-plug plug. What's the first thing you do when you know you're moving out, or when you arrive at your new place and the movers (or friends and/or parents) have left? Tell us your tales of experience in the comments. Renters: 7 Things to Do Before Moving Out 7 Things To Do Before You Move Out [Apartment Therapy] [Sponsored] NEC

Apple launching 22-inch touchscreen iMac this year?
Sure, those new Core i7, 27-inch iMacs are lovely things ( when they're working ), but there's something missing: the sense of touch. That's coming soon, according to a report published in the Chinese Commercial Times . The new 22-inch model is said to slot in between current 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs, will use a capacitive touchscreen provided by Sintek Photronic, and unsurprisingly will be built by Quanta . Beyond that, and a supposed release before the end of the year, we know nothing -- but maybe we'll learn more at a certain press event next week? Skype Class Action Settlement Offers $4 For Expired Credits [Skype]
If you purchased Skype credit that expired prior to December 31st 2009 after 180 days of activity, you could be entitled to a $4 credit. Basically, the plaintiffs in the case argue that the Skype policy of expiring credits after 180 days of inactivity violates various state law—including "gift certificate" consumer protection. Skype is all like "nahhh" and the plantiffs are all like "uh-huh!" But the bottom line is this—the parties have agreed on a settlement that would eliminate the 180 day policy and offer a $4 voucher to customers who had credits expire before the end of last year. Check out the statement below to review your options. NOTICE OF PROPOSED SETTLEMENT OF CLASS ACTION If you are a United States resident who purchased Skype Credit that, on at least one occasion prior to December 31, 2009, expired after 180 days of inactivity, a proposed class action settlement may affect your rights. PLEASE READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY. * Plaintiffs Holly Barker and Brian Carness have filed lawsuits against defendants Skype Communications, S.a.r.l. ("Skype Communications"), Skype Technologies S.A., Skype, Inc. and eBay Inc., on its own behalf and as successor by merger to Skype Delaware Holdings, Inc. (collectively, the "Defendants") challenging the Skype Credit expiration policy. Plaintiffs allege that Skype User Accounts and Skype Credit constitute "gift certificates" that cannot expire or be subject to inactivity fees under various states' laws and that Defendants unlawfully applied the Skype Credit expiration policy against their Skype Credit balances after 180 days of inactivity in supposed violation of these various states' laws, including applicable "gift certificate," consumer protection and/or unfair and deceptive practices laws. * Defendants deny that they did anything wrong whatsoever, and contend that plaintiffs' claims are meritless. No court has decided which side is right, and both sides have agreed to resolve the cases and provide relief to the Settlement Class instead of litigation. There is a proposed settlement on behalf of a nationwide class of current and former United States resident purchasers of Skype Credit from Skype Communications, which, if approved, will provide that Skype Communications shall discontinue its Skype Credit expiration policy and implement a Reactivation Policy whereby Skype Credit will no longer expire after 180 days of inactivity, but rather be deemed "inactive" and subject to reactivation. In addition, Skype Communications, on behalf of itself and the other Defendants, has agreed to pay a Settlement Amount of $1,850,000 in full and complete settlement of the Released Claims, which shall include: (i) attorneys' fees and costs and named plaintiffs' incentive awards not to exceed $1,000 each, which collectively shall not exceed 25% of the Settlement Amount subject to Court approval; and (ii) availability, on a claims made basis, of an electronic voucher for $4.00 of Skype Credit per claimant from the Net Settlement Amount. * If you are a member of the Settlement Class, your legal rights are affected and you have a choice to make right now: [CLICK TO ENLARGE] [ creditexpirationclassaction Image via Philip Bantz ]

Case-Mate Hug Brings Affordable Touchstone-Like Wireless Charging to iPhone [Chargers]
The lovably named Case-Mate Hug is an inductive charger for the iPhone that allows you to just plop it on the charging mat rather than fiddling with cables like a monkey. Are you a monkey? You're not a monkey. The Hug is a two part inductive charger, including both a fairly normal-looking (if kind of heavy and industrial) case and a slightly-larger-than-iPhone charging mat. It's a lot like the Powermat , but about half the price. The idea is to keep your iPhone in the case at all times, and then lay the encased iPhone on the mat instead of plugging in a cable. It works pretty well, and Case-Mate says it'll charge your iPhone in about the same amount of time as primitive cables, but these things are kind of dumb at the moment. You still need to leave it sitting in a specific place, and it still needs to be touching the actual mat, so it's not really that much better a solution than just plugging it in. On the other hand, Fulton, who makes the tech, plans to put them in public places like airports—which would be pretty awesome, we admit. The Hug be available in a couple weeks (before the end of January, at least) for $90. [ Case-Mate ]

The Coming Decade In 3D, HD Television [3D]
Ready or not, 3D HDTV is going to take the television scene by storm in the coming decade, at least according to our buddies over at HDGuru . Here's why they think the future is more Avatar than anything else: First, even though manufacturers might be rushing things, considering their last lovechild, Blu-Ray discs, hasn't really taken anything by a storm, let alone a slight tropical depression, there are some consumer-friendly caveats to consider before grinding those teeth in anger. Take price, for example. HDGuru predicts set prices will be largely in line with current HDTV offerings. Initial pricing for a 40-inch 3D-ready 240Hz LED LCD will check in at about $1300, whereas a similar non-3D set from Samsung is currently for sale is $1,250. The other elephant in the room, as least when it came to HD, is programming. While full-time HD programming has been around since HD Net launched in September 2001, it took until the end of the decade before this particular TV watcher could safely say all he watches on TV anymore are HD-only channels. Luckily—if you like where 3D is going anyway—that shouldn't be a problem for 3D in the 2010s. HDGuru assures us that the influx of PS3s on the market, coupled with 50 DirectTV 3D channels before the end of 2010, will ensure there's ample 3D TV available for the new sets that Sony, et al, will demand you buy for the best viewing experience. Sports, the original driver of HD content, will also come into play here, no pun intended. As for HDTVs, 3D aside, the future is unsurprisingly cheaper, thinner and more portable. That's kind of how tech works, and beyond 2010 you can expect to see an influx of thin, LED edge-lit TVs that go larger than 60-inches. On the opposite end of the spectrum, expect more Zunes. That is, "Zune" in the sense that portables sporting HD visuals will become ubiquitous—who knows what fate will befall Microsoft's shiny player. Lastly, this one's for Mark Wilson, who got headaches watching a great Avatar flick in 3D : HD glasses might eventually become unnecessary. At an expected $70 a pair, they won't be missed, but this prediction may take a while and will arrive first in the form of a single-viewer laptop at the end of 2010. Again, predictions all. Nothing firm, but nothing too unbelievable either. There are more at HDGuru to parse and dissect and flame. Why don't you leave a few of your own in the comments? [ HDGuru ]
