MythBusters’ Adam Savage: My Lifelong Pursuit of the Perfect Blade Runner Gun [Ultimatediy]

Giz friend Adam Savage , in our estimation, can make just about anything. Here he explains the path he took to turn a toy gun into an astoundingly sharp Blade Runner pistol replica. I made my first Blade Runner pistol when I was 18, while living in Hell's Kitchen, NYC. I stared at the VHS version on pause and made sketches. Put it together from toys and model kit parts. It's lovely and terrible. (Years later the internet would teach me that the six dollar plastic gun I bought on Canal Street in NYC and cannibalized for the grip was created by Edison Giacattoli, a legendary toy gun designer.) I made a crazy accurate scratch built when I was 30, from resin and bondo. I had great picture reference but shitty size reference—it was 20% too small. Fuck! I even had it chrome plated at one point, and I weathered it. In 2006, the screen-used original surfaced after 25 some-odd years and sold at auction last year for $256,000. Supposedly to Paul Allen. The last picture is the final iteration. It's 95% finished. My hand-built baby. About 30 to 40 hours of labor spread out over (at least) 6 years. An original Steyr-Mannlicher .222 target rifle receiver and magazine and a Charter Arms Bulldog .44, both demilled and gunsmithed by me (working with hardened steel—FUN!) with custom machined aluminum and steel parts (barrel, grip, butt) and made as close as possible, in every respect, to the original. Painstaking. That is all I have to say on the subject (probably not). I can't even describe how good it feels to hold it in my hand. Follow Adam on twitter !

Apple Warned the Industry Before Suing HTC? [Patents]

According to Oppenheimer's Yair Reiner, Apple's lawsuit against HTC didn't come out of left field as most of us thought. Really, Apple had warned handset manufacturers that they were going to be stricter about enforcing their patents . "Starting in January, Apple launched a series of C-Level discussions with tier-1 handset makers to underscore its growing displeasure at seeing its iPhone-related IP [intellectual property] infringed. The lawsuit filed against HTC thus appears to be Apple's way of putting a public, lawyered-up exclamation point on a series of blunt conversations that have been occurring behind closed doors." Note: Reiner doesn't mention Apple warning HTC specifically, but as a tier-1 handset manufacturer, it's hard to imagine their exclusion from such conversations. As Reiner tells it, Apple's actions have sent "rival software and hardware teams...back to the drawing board to look for work-arounds" while lawyers look for holes in the suit. That's not fantastic news if you don't either produce or carry an iPhone. [ Brainstorm Tech ]

Thinking Space Maps Your Mind on Android [Downloads]

Android: Your best thoughts can come to you when you're nowhere near your work space. If you're carrying an Android phone, Thinking Space is an elegant and convenient way to map out where your mind goes on the go. Thinking Space does most of what you'd want a desktop mind mapping package to do, and a little more, in some cases. You'll figure out the methods for adding and branching thoughts pretty quickly, and if you're already using Freemind , it can read those files, too. Your mind maps are stored on your phone's SD card, but can also be converted to images and sent by email, or uploaded to a cloud-based space Thinking Space has set up. I've only just started tinkering with Thinking Space, but the How-To Geek has repeatedly advised me that it's a worthy tool for organizing thoughts. If you, like me, are a neophyte in this realm, read up on Brad Isaac's beginner's guide to mind mapping meetings for a primer on getting the most from your maps. Thinking Space is a free download for Android phones, available in the Market and as a QR code scan at its home site. Thinking Space for Android

Record Live HD TV On Your Mac or Windows 7 PC With The Updated Elgato EyeTV Hybrid [Tuners]

The German company's released a few tuner sticks here and there in the US, but like cheese, David Hasselhoff and soccer, Elgato's far bigger in Europe. Having said that, their latest EyeTV Hybrid dongle could change their situation. The EyeTV Hybrid stick is now both Mac and Windows 7 compatible, with the EyeTV software bundled for Mac users, whereas Windows users can watch TV through Windows Media Center. It's apparently the world's smallest hybrid TV tuner, and works just like the previous model, recording live TV on a PC which can be paused and rewound. Entire seasons can be scheduled for recording too—which is most handy if you don't have cable or Tivo. It's available now in the US and Canada for $149.95, and is also sold at Apple stores. 1024-bit RSA encryption cracked by carefully starving CPU of electricity

Since 1977, RSA public-key encryption has protected privacy and verified authenticity when using computers, gadgets and web browsers around the globe, with only the most brutish of brute force efforts (and 1,500 years of processing time) felling its 768-bit variety earlier this year. Now, three eggheads (or Wolverines, as it were) at the University of Michigan claim they can break it simply by tweaking a device's power supply. By fluctuating the voltage to the CPU such that it generated a single hardware error per clock cycle, they found that they could cause the server to flip single bits of the private key at a time, allowing them to slowly piece together the password. With a small cluster of 81 Pentium 4 chips and 104 hours of processing time, they were able to successfully hack 1024-bit encryption in OpenSSL on a SPARC-based system, without damaging the computer, leaving a single trace or ending human life as we know it. That's why they're presenting a paper at the Design, Automation and Test conference this week in Europe, and that's why -- until RSA hopefully fixes the flaw -- you should keep a close eye on your server room's power supply. 1024-bit RSA encryption cracked by carefully starving CPU of electricity originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 02:47:00 EST. Coby intros Snapp pocket camcorders, for those with small pockets

In a world full of stylish pocket camcorders , there are few reasons to recommend Coby's ho-hum Snapp series, which has only just now managed the transition from cheap plastic junk to tasteful Flip knockoff with today's introduction of the CAM3001, CAM4505 and CAM5001 Snapp HD. Recording 640 x 480 footage over MJPEG, the cheaper two models are still not much better than your average VGA webcam, and with only megabytes of internal storage, all three will require a sizeable memory card to capture any real content. But when you consider the price of these things -- Amazon shows preorder prices of $30 and $50 for the budget cams and $80 for the 720p CAM5001 HD -- you might yet find yourself combing desk drawers for that spare SDHC card.
